AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's Team PrISUm had a long second day on Sunrayce 97, getting about 100 miles into the 170 mile route before pulling over and charging the car batteries with solar energy.
As of 7 p.m. CST, the team was near Vandalia, Ill., about 70 miles east of Godfrey, Ill., the overnight stop. Team members pulled over about 5 p.m. to take advantage of what little Sun they had during the day.
"It was overcast and hazy the whole day," said Team PrISUm director Beth Hunter. "We had little solar power to run on and we didn't want to run our batteries down too far. We'll trailer in tonight and get ready for tomorrow."
The third leg of Sunrayce is 165 miles from Godfrey to Fulton, Mo.
Sunrayce 97 coincides with the week of the summer solstice. The 1,230-mile race began June 19 (today) in Indianapolis and ends June 28 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
