SCIENCE BOUND STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN MINI SOLAR CAR RACE

AMES, Iowa -- About 20 eighth- to tenth-graders from Des Moines public schools will build and race small solar cars Saturday, Feb. 15, at Iowa State University. The activity is one of six planned for 100 minority school children enrolled in the Science Bound program.

Science Bound, a partnership between Iowa State University and the Des Moines Public Schools, reaches out to minority middle school children and tries to get them interested in careers in science- and math-related fields. In addition to the solar car activity, other students will learn about materials research, the physics of comets, and electromagnets and electro-motors.

"We try to get these students interested in science and make them familiar with the labs and facilities at Iowa State," said Science Bound coordinator Jackie Manatt.

The solar car activity will be held by ISU's Team PrISUm, a student organization that is currently building and will race a full-sized solar car this summer in Sunrayce'97.
