ISU HOLDS RECEPTION FOR NATIONAL MERIT AND ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARS
AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University will hold a reception for its 1997 National Merit and Achievement Scholars on Thursday, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union.
Iowa State enrolled 110 National Merit and three Achievement Scholars this fall. The students represent 11 states.
President Martin Jischke and Vice President for Student Affairs Tom Hill will speak at the reception. Upon arriving at the reception, each student will mark their hometown with a pin on a large U.S. map. The students will conclude the reception by posing for a group photo with Jischke.
Last fall, Iowa State enrolled 154 National Merit Scholars, ranking the university eighth among all universities enrolling Merit Scholars and fourth among all public universities. Iowa State enrolled four National Achievement Scholars in 1996. The National Achievement Scholarship program is conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Program for African American high school students.
The National Merit and National Achievement scholarship programs identify "exceptionally able" high school students who performed well both during their high school years and on a series of standard entrance exams.
