U.S. CONGRESSMAN TO ADDRESS IOWA TRANSPORTATIONISSUES MAY 2
AMES, Iowa -- U.S. Rep. Tom Petri (R-Wisc.) will speak to Iowa State University students during a transportation seminar course Friday, May 2, at 10 a.m. in N147 Lagomarcino Hall. Petri is chair of the Surface and Transportation Subcommittee of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
Petri will talk to students about the future of planning and funding for surface transportation at the state and national levels, including the prospect of naming Interstate-35 an international trade superhighway.
Petri also will discuss the intelligent transportation systems program, which is designed to encourage the development and use of "smart" technologies to transport people and goods safely and more efficiently. A dashboard computer that displays a traveler's most direct route to a destination, as well as alternate routes around road construction zones or traffic jams, is an example of "smart" technology.
Reps. Greg Ganske (R-Iowa) and Leonard Boswell (D-Iowa) will accompany Petri to Iowa State. Boswell serves on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and Ganske serves on the House Commerce Committee.
Petri's visit is sponsored by the ISU Center for Transportation Research and Education.
The course will be broadcast to various locations via the Iowa Communications Network (ICN). To obtain a list of ICN locations, call (515) 294-8103.
