ISU HOSTS MOLECULAR BIOLOGY SUMMER PROGRAM FOR YOUTH

Iowa State University will offer a four-week biological sciences program for eighth and ninth graders from June 21 through July 19. The Molecular Biology Enrichment for Youth (MBEY) program provides a mix of laboratory experimentation and classroom activities, and participants will present their individual research projects at the conclusion of the session.

"We provide an opportunity for younger students to use research-level equipment and take advantage of outstanding faculty expertise," says Bernard White, professor of biochemistry and MBEY program director. "Over the years, program participants from highly diverse backgrounds have continued to show enthusiasm and an outstanding level of achievement in science."

Participants will learn laboratory skills in chemistry, biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology, and biotechnology. The program includes field trips and cultural and recreational activities. Students will live in ISU residence halls during the program.

Tuition is paid by grants from the National Science Foundation, Eli Lilly & Co., and Iowa State. Participants pay their own room and food costs of $650. Need-based grants for housing are available.

The program is limited to 20 students and the application deadline is April 18. Women, minorities, and people with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.
