MANDEL, ISU'S MARY LOUISE SMITH CHAIR HOLDER, AT ISU OCT. 6- 7

AMES, Iowa -- Ruth Mandel, political scholar and holder of the Mary Louise Smith Chair in Women and Politics at Iowa State University, will be on the ISU campus Oct. 6-7 as part of Women's Week activities.

A nationally known scholar and speaker on women and politics, Mandel is director of the Eagleton Institute of Politics and professor of politics at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J. While on campus, Mandel will visit political science classes, deliver a public lecture on women in politics, meet with students and participate in a symposium on women and leadership.

Her public lecture, "Incrementalism vs. the Ketchup Bottle: Women's Progress in Politics," will be at 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Mandel also will speak at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 7, as part of a symposium on "Women and Leadership." The symposium, which runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., will be in the Pioneer Room of the Memorial Union. It also will feature panel presentations from Iowa women leaders from the public and private sector.

Mandel writes and lectures about women and leadership, women as political candidates, women in office, women's political networks and the "gender gap" in politics. She is the author of "In the Running: The New Woman Candidate." She also teaches courses on women and American politics and political leadership.

In 1993, Mandel was named vice chairperson of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council by President Bill Clinton.

The Mary Louise Smith Chair in Women and Politics was created in 1995 to honor the late Mary Louise Smith, the only woman to chair the National Committee of the Republican Party. Smith, who died in August, led the Republican national committee from 1974 through 1977. Fundraising continues to endow the $1 million chair, which is designed to bring outstanding political scholars and leaders to campus.

The events are sponsored by The Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women & Politics with support from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Department of Political Science, Margaret Sloss Women's Center, and the Committee on Lectures (funded by GSB) as part of ISU's Women's Week activities.
