LORD IS NEW IPRT ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR
AMES, Iowa --William Lord, an Anson Marston distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been named associate director of the Institute for Physical Research and Technology at Iowa State University.
"I am extremely pleased that Lord has joined our team," said Joel Snow, IPRT director. "His outstanding academic and administrative skills will be an asset. He will continue his active research program in nondestructive testing and his study of the integration of learning and research."
Lord assumed his new duties in March. These duties include oversight of IPRT centers (excluding the Ames Lab), budget and personnel concerns, program planning, and center-specific initiatives. The position has been vacant since David Hoffman returned to full-time teaching in January. Hoffman was interim director of IPRT from 1991-93.
Lord's research interest is numerical modeling of the interactions of energy and materials, particularly as they relate to the development of nondestructive evaluation practices.
Before coming to ISU, Lord held academic positions at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville; Clarkson College of Technology, Potsdam, N.Y.; University College Cardiff in the United Kingdom; and Colorado State University, Fort Collins. In 1988, he became the first holder of the Palmer Chair in the electrical and computer engineering department at ISU, as well as associate director of the Center for Nondestructive Evaluation.
He has also served as associate dean for Research and Graduate Studies in the College of Engineering, and assistant chair and coordinator of Graduate Studies in the electrical and computer engineering department. He received his Ph.D., in 1964, from the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom.
Lord is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (U.S.); Institution of Electrical Engineers (U.K.); and the British Institute of Nondestructive Testing. He served as national director of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing from 1990-93 representing the Education and Qualifications Council and has several research and faculty awards.
The Institute for Physical Research and Technology is a federation of research, technology development and technology transfer entities at Iowa State University.
