WOI RADIO LAUNCHES 'IOWA WEEK II'
AMES, Iowa -- Iowa's past, present and future will be the subject of a series of interviews, documentaries and live broadcasts during WOI Radio's annual Iowa Week, Aug. 17-23.
Iowa Week will showcase different aspects of Iowa and culminate with a small town picnic on Saturday, Aug. 23. The location of this year's picnic, held last year at the Garst Farm in Coon Rapids, will be announced at a later date.
WOI-FM will begin each day of Iowa Week with its morning march at 7:15 a.m. The morning march will be music recorded at the annual Boone Community Bands Day.
Last year's Iowa Week earned numerous awards from various national and state broadcast organizations.
Among the highlights of Iowa Week are:
An Iowa Week schedule for WOI AM and WOI FM is below. This schedule is subject to change
- A week's worth of special "Talk of Iowa" programs on WOI AM 640. Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper editor Michael Gartner will talk about famous Iowa court cases. WOI's political commentator and Iowa State professor Steffen Schmidt will analyze the Iowa political scene. Other guests include Iowa State President Martin Jischke and Iowa State rural sociologist Paul Lasley.
- "Iowa: The Rural Melting Pot," a broadcast focusing on the history and impact of immigration in Iowa. The broadcast will be an installment of the "Roundtable" series Aug. 21 on WOI FM 90.1 and WOI AM 640.
- A road trip to Marshalltown Aug. 18 with the ISU solar car, ExCYtor, and a 1922 Model-T Ford pickup, with brief stops in Colo, Nevada and State Center. The ride will start at 9:30 a.m. at the WOI station on the ISU campus. Its final destination will be Stone's Restaurant in Marshalltown, where WOI's Todd Mundt and ISU extension's Doug Cooper and Elwynn Taylor will host a special live "Midday" broadcast. The trio will enjoy a home style meal and talk with local residents about life in Iowa's small towns.
- A special look at the Hoover Library and Birthplace in West Branch, including interviews with the library's director, the library association, the National Park Service personnel and visitors.
- Documentaries on the Villisca Ax Murders, the fate of handwriting in the computer age, raising thoroughbred horses in Iowa
- A reunion of WOI's "Voters of Madison County" group, who will assess political developments in Iowa since the November elections.
- An Iowa trivia contest that will give listeners the opportunity to win tickets to jazz concerts, horse shows, art displays, country music and classical pops concerts.
