MUSIC, DANCE CELEBRATE INDIA INDEPENDENCE AT ISU

AMES, Iowa-- India's 50 years of independence will be celebrated at Iowa State University in October with performances of classical Indian music and dance.

The events are sponsored by the Society for Indian Tradition and Art (SITAR), an Iowa State student organization.

Shri T.N. Krishnan will perform a violin concert of Indian classical music on Wednesday, Oct. 8, a 7 p.m. in Fisher Theater at Iowa State University. Krishnan has received many award for his music, including his country's Padma Vibushan presented by the president of India. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Abhinay Dance School featuring Jayalaksmi Eshwar and her students will perform an Indian classical dance concert on Sunday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. in the Ames City Auditorium, 515 Clark Ave.

Eshwar and her students will perform a special dance in observance of India's 50th year of independence. Tickets are $14 non-SITAR members and $10 for members. Students will received a 50 percent discount.
