ISU HOLDS FORUM ON FUTURE OF VEISHEA ON SEPT. 26AMES, Iowa -- A forum on the future of Veishea, Iowa State's annual spring festival, Friday, Sept. 26, will be held from noon to 2 p.m. in the Gallery of the Memorial Union.
The future of Iowa State's 75-year-old tradition is in question following the murder of a young man near the university's campustown area during this year's Veishea celebration. The annual event also has been marred in recent years by rioting, resulting in personal injury and property damage. President Martin C. Jischke has stated that Veishea 1998 can take place only if the student body pledges to organize and support a safe, alcohol-free festival.
University officials and student leaders scheduled to participate in the forum are Jischke; Thomas L. Hill, vice president for student affairs; Ben Dohrmann and Kathryn Whittaker, Veishea 1998 co-chairs; Mark Holm, ISU Inter-Fraternity Council president; Jay McLaren, ISU Inter- Residence Hall Association president; Sonja Rice, Panhellenic Council president; and Robert Wiese, ISU Government of the Student Body . John F. McCarroll, director of university relations, will serve as moderator.
Jischke will make brief remarks at the opening of the forum. Other members of the panel also will have the opportunity to make opening remarks. Following opening remarks, questions will be taken from members of the audience. To ensure that everyone gets a chance to speak, people will be asked to limit questions and comments to three minutes.
As a followup to the forum, a "We Gotta Talk" roundtable on Veishea has been scheduled for noon on Tuesday, Sept. 30, in the South Ballroom of the Memorial Union. The "We Gotta Talk" roundtable is sponsored by GSB, the Student Union Board and the Committee on Lectures.
