ISU FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES COLLEGE NAMES NEXT HILTON CHAIR

AMES, Iowa -- Betty Sue Flowers, professor of English and former associate dean of graduate studies, University of Texas, Austin, has been named to the Dean Helen LeBaron Hilton Endowed Chair in Iowa State University's College of Family and Consumer Sciences. Her appointment is for the 1997-98 academic year.

Flowers is a well-known author, poet and business consultant. Her works include Joseph Campbell and The Power of Myth, both written in collaboration with Television Commentator Bill Moyers. Flowers has served as a consultant to NASA. She has also been a member of the Envisioning Network for General Motors and a writer of global scenarios for Shell International.

"Betty Sue's vision and rich experiences will be tremendous assets as we chart the future of our college for the 21st century," said Family and Consumer Sciences Dean Beverly Crabtree. "We look forward to her sharing her perspectives with faculty, staff and students at Iowa State. This is an exciting follow-up to the focus of last year's chair, leadership for change."

The Hilton Chair, endowed by a gift in excess of $1.3 million from the estate of Helen LeBaron Hilton, is the largest endowed chair in Iowa State's history. Helen LeBaron Hilton was dean of the ISU College of Home Economics (now Family and Consumer Sciences) from 1952 to 1975.

Flowers succeeds James Autry, former president of the magazine group at Meredith Corp., who held the chair during the 1996-97 academic year.
