YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS GETTING DOWN TO
BUSINESS AT SUMMER CAMP
AMES, Iowa -- The Iowa State University Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship, in cooperation with the Iowa Agricultural Development Authority (IADA), will host the "Young Iowa Entrepreneurs Summer Youth Camp," July 6 - 11, at Iowa State.
The camp is designed for high school students interested in entrepreneurial careers in agriculture or veterinary medicine.
"We want to spark the entrepreneurial spirit in these students," said Steve Carter, interim director of the ISU Pappajohn Center. "Our goal is to encourage them to think about their futures by providing them with an understanding of the skills needed to be successful business people."
"This camp enables us to recognize farmers as entrepreneurs," said Steve Ferguson, IADA executive director. "We hope to raise students' awareness about the numerous career opportunities available to them in rural Iowa."
The camp will include presentations on business skills such as marketing, sales, financing and management. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with several successful entrepreneurs and business professionals, legislators, agribusiness specialists, veterinarians, and financial experts.
Keynote speakers for the camp include motivational speaker Jolene Brown; Peter Reese, author of The Agri-Preneur's Prosperity Manual; and Roy Reiman, entrepreneur and magazine publisher. ISU President Martin Jischke will also speak at the camp.
Each student will have the opportunity to compete for college scholarships
by developing and presenting a business plan for an entrepreneurial business idea. The presentations will be judged by other camp participants and a panel of judges from the business community.
Other activities include a semi-formal banquet and dance and tours of the Iowa State campus, including the ISU Veterinary Teaching Hospital
Registration is limited to 200 students. Application deadline is May 1. Participants will be selected based on their application form and a brief essay written about why they wish to become an entrepreneur. Students must be entering their junior or senior year of high school in August of 1997 to be eligible for the camp.
Cost of the camp is $250. Those selected have the opportunity to raise their attendance fee through local sponsorship.
