RESTRUCTURING RESULTS IN NEW DEPARTMENTS

AMES, Iowa -- Restructuring at Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine will result in two new departments.

The Department of Veterinary Anatomy and the Department of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology will merge to create a new Department of Biomedical Sciences. In addition, the production animal medicine and services section of Veterinary Extension, the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory will merge to create a new Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine.

The changes were approved by the State Board of Regents at a meeting today (June 19) in Okoboji.

The restructuring was recommended by external review teams, faculty steering committees, the College of Veterinary Medicine cabinet and college faculty. Officials expect the changes will increase efficiency and allow veterinary medicine faculty and staff to better meet the needs of students, livestock producers, veterinarians and others.

The Department of Biomedical Sciences will have responsibility for continued undergraduate, D.V.M. and graduate instruction in anatomy, physiology and pharmacology. The creation of the Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine will allow faculty and staff to better assist veterinarians and their clients to detect, control and prevent animal diseases.

No date has been set to implement the changes.
