ISU PROFESSOR SELECTED FOR ENGINEERING FRONTIERS SYMPOSIUM

AMES, Iowa -- Carolina Cruz-Neira, Litton assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, will participate in the National Academy of Engineering's 1997 Symposium on Frontiers of Engineering. The symposium will be held Sept. 18-20 at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center in Irvine, Calif.

The Frontiers of Engineering meeting brings together the country's top young engineers, age 30 to 45, involved in leading-edge research. Eighty-two participants were chosen from the 270 who applied. The first Frontiers of Engineering meeting was held in 1995 to help engineers learn more about new developments and problem areas in their fields.

Cruz-Neira's research specializes in the integration of virtual reality technologies, high-speed networks and high- performance computing. She is a driving force behind C2, Iowa State's advanced virtual reality room.

"I work on applying virtual reality to engineering and science . . . working with companies and researchers to explore the benefits of using virtual reality in their projects," Cruz-Neira said.

Cruz-Neira's also does research into statistical visualization, virtual libraries and has a project with the Museum of Jewish Heritage, which opens Saturday, Sept. 20, in New York.

In addition to being an assistant professor, Cruz-Neira also is an associate scientist at Iowa Center for Engineering Manufacturing Technology at Iowa State.
