ISU, CORONES REACH SETTLEMENT ON GRANT DISPUTE

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University and Dr. James Corones, a former administrator at the Ames Laboratory, have reached an agreement mutually resolving any disputes concerning a grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Under the agreement, Corones has resigned from Iowa State University effective August 15, 1997, said Paul Tanaka, director of Iowa State's Legal Services.

The agreement resolves a dispute over a DOE grant that was awarded to the Krell Institute, which was started by Corones. The three-year, $7.1 million grant is for three education programs in computer science that had been administered by the Ames Laboratory, which is run for the DOE by Iowa State.

DOE initially awarded the grant to Krell in October 1996, but Iowa State asked that DOE review its decision to transfer the programs outside of Ames Laboratory. This past June, the DOE rejected Iowa State's appeal.

In addition to being the program director of Informatics and Math/Computer Education at the Ames Lab, Corones was a tenured professor in the ISU math department.
