GTE OFFICIALS AT ISU FEB. 13 FOR PRESENTATION OF MATH, SCIENCE
EDUCATION GRANT
GTE officials will be on the Iowa State campus Thursday, Feb. 13, to present university officials with a grant for a math and science education program.
The program, called "Science Bound: The Younger Generation," is aimed at enriching math and science education for minority students in Des Moines elementary schools. It was one of 15 university-based programs nationwide to receive a two-year, $30,000 GTE FOCUS grant.
The presentation of the grant will be at 9 a.m. in the Gallery of the Memorial Union. President Martin Jischke and several university, GTE and Des Moines Public Schools officials will attend.
Other university officials participating in the grant presentation include Ed Lewis, associate provost; Dan Robinson, interim vice president for student affairs; and Rafael Rodriguez, director of Minority Student Affairs. Kathy Trahanovsky and Jackie Manatt will represent the Science Bound Program.
GTE officials scheduled to attend are Robert Bradley, upper midwest division general manager; Charles Bruggermann, area manager, and Robert Cook, public affairs manager. Des Moines Public Schools officials attending will be Ed Peterson, supervisor of services, and Ray Armstrong, associate supervisor for teaching and learning.
"Science Bound: The Younger Generation" will focus on the math, science and reading education of African American and Latino fourth graders in selected Des Moines elementary schools.
