SOLAR CAR AND STUDENTS WILL RETURN TO IOWA STATE ON FRIDAYAMES, Iowa -- Three Iowa State University students, the solar car and associated equipment are expected back on campus by Friday (May 2) evening. The students -- Beth Hunter, Eric Flakne and Jeff Etringer -- stayed in Topeka, Kan., to be with three solar car team members who were hospitalized.
Brian Galvin, Karla Abrahamson and Andrew Earhart remain hospitalized at Stormont Vail Regional Medical Center in Topeka. Galvin's condition is listed as satisfactory, Abrahamson's is fair and Earhart's is serious. All have shown considerable improvement since they were involved in an April 29 accident near Topeka.
Galvin is expected to be released on Friday morning and Abrahamson may be released on Friday. Earhart will remain at Stormont for additional observations. The university is making arrangements for the return of Galvin, Abrahamson and Earhart to their homes when they are released from the hospital.
Hunter, Flakne and Etringer will return to Ames on an ISU airplane on Friday. The car is being brought back by Mike Garrison of Topeka. Garrison heard of the ISU accident and offered to bring the car back to Ames in his trailer. A Winnebago used by the students will be driven back to Ames by a chauffeur.
Twelve members of the solar car team returned to Ames Wednesday evening.
