75TH VEISHEA TO CELEBRATE TRADITION OF STUDENT LEADERSHIP AT
ISU
AMES, Iowa -- Veishea, which turns 75 this year, will honor the long tradition of student leadership at Iowa State University. "Celebrating 75 Years of Leadership" is the theme for Iowa State's annual student-organized celebration, April 18-20.
"Veishea is one of Iowa State's best examples of what results from student leadership," said Daniel Faidley and Stephanie Carney Michaels, co-chairs for the executive planning. "Veishea has been around for 75 years and contributed much to the heritage of Iowa State because of the efforts of Iowa State students."
Veishea organizers have chosen Tom Thielen, former vice president for student affairs, to be the grand marshal of the Veishea parade because of his longtime support of Veishea and ISU students. The parade begins Saturday, April 19, at 11:45 a.m. KCCI- TV will begin live coverage at noon.
Seventy-five years of Veishea highlights will be shared in an anniversary display in the Memorial Union Great Hall from noon to 5 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The display is free and includes a timeline and video that outlines Veishea history.
Other highlights of Veishea 1997 include:
-- Opening ceremonies at noon on Friday, April 18. President Martin Jischke and Family and Consumer Sciences Dean Beverly Crabtree will speak. The Veishea torch also will be lit.
-- Stars Over Veishea, the annual musical production, will be "Bye, Bye Birdie." This year's SOV is a joint production of Veishea and ISU Theatre. "Bye, Bye Birdie" is the story of Conrad Birdie, a rock-and-roll icon who is going into the army. Before he goes, his agent concocts a publicity stunt -- a kiss good-bye from an all-American teenage girl on "The Ed Sullivan Show."
The production will be Friday and Saturday, April 18 and 19, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, April 20, at 2 p.m. in C.Y. Stephens Auditorium. Tickets are available at the Iowa State Center Ticket Office or any TicketMaster outlet for $12.50, $11.50 and $9.50, with senior citizen, student and group discounts available.
-- Edward James Olmos, a leader in the Hispanic community and actor currently starring in the film "Selena," will speak at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Memorial Union Great Hall. The event is free.
-- A multicultural entertainment event called Harambee, which is a Swahili term for "coming together," will begin at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, April 19, in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union. Harambee will feature a variety of multicultural events, including gospel music; hip hop dancing; Latin dancing; a step show performance; skits and comedy; and a display of Asian, Latin and African fashion. A variety of multicultural student groups are participating in Harambee. The event is free.
-- Veishea cherry pie sale will be sold in 16 MacKay from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until they are gone Saturday. Pie sale are 90 cents each.
-- Games, live music, radio broadcasts and food vendors will take over Welch Avenue for "A Taste of Veishea" Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m.
-- More than 90 clubs and student organizations will host open houses across campus Friday and Saturday.
-- Comedian Geoff Brown, who has performed on HBO's "Def Comedy Jam" and A&E's "Evening at the Improv," will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Memorial Union Great Hall. The show is free.
-- An Old Iowa country breakfast will be served south of the campanile from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $4.
