ISU TO BREAK GROUND ON PALMER BUILDING

AMES, Iowa -- A groundbreaking ceremony for Iowa State's new Palmer Human Development and Family Studies Building will be Friday, April 11, at 4 p.m. The building site is adjacent to the east wing of MacKay Hall on central campus. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be in the LeBaron Auditorium, College of Family and Consumer Sciences (CFCS).

Ceremony speakers include James R. Palmer and Barbara Raeder Palmer, State College, Pa.; Martin Jischke, ISU president; Beverly Crabtree, dean of CFCS; and other CFCS administrators.

The 21,600-square-foot facility will house the College of Family and Consumer Sciences' human development and family studies department and its various programs including the Child Development Laboratory School, the Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic, and the Financial Counseling Clinic.

By integrating these components in one facility, the college will demonstrate a model for offering a wide range of services for families and children, while providing a learning laboratory for students and faculty, according to Crabtree.

The cost of the project is $5.9 million, most of which has been raised by the Iowa State Foundation through private donations from over 1,500 alumni and friends of CFCS. Construction is expected to be completed by Fall 1999.

James Palmer and Barbara Raeder Palmer donated $1 million toward the construction of the new building in February 1996. Barbara Raeder Palmer graduated from Iowa State in 1946 with a degree in home economics. Jim Palmer received a degree in electrical engineering from ISU in 1944. For 31 years, Jim served as chief executive of C-COR Electronics, Inc., a firm that develops and manufactures amplifiers and other devices for data communications and cable television industries. Barbara was a director of C-COR for more than 23 years.

Completing this project was the highest priority for the college's $16 million goal toward Campaign Destiny: To Become the Best, the largest fundraising effort in Iowa State history. The five-year, $300 million campaign was publicly launched in September 1996.
