TRAFFIC ALERT FOR ISU STAFF, RETURNING STUDENTS
AMES, Iowa -- Employees and students returning for fall classes at Iowa State University may find it a little tricky to get from here to there during the first weeks of the semester. Several utility, road and parking improvement projects scheduled for summer completion by ISU or city of Ames crews still are in the works. Following is a summary of the status of key improvement projects to help students and staff adjust their travel plans to campus.
ISU parking lots:
Lot 50
The west half of Lot 50 (south of East Hall) has been repaved and
remarked to make more efficient use of the space. Similar work is
under way on the east half of the lot and scheduled for
completion by Friday, Aug. 30. Until that time, vehicles with
reserved permits may park in the west half of Lot 50. Vehicles
with general staff permits are asked to park in Lot 100 (south
side of Lied Center) at no charge.
Lot 40
Construction projects began Monday, Aug. 19, at the Seed Science
Building and Kildee Hall. As a result, approximately 50 reserved
spots have been lost in Lot 40 (west of Seed Science). The
affected permit holders have been relocated to nearby lots.
Campus roads:
Bissell Road near Beyer Hall
The inner two lanes of Bissell Road opened Monday, Aug. 19. The
outer two lanes will remain closed for construction uses through
September. Access to the Pearson loading dock has been restored.
Paving of the area between Black Engineering, Exhibit Hall and
ERI is expected to be completed by mid-September.
Wallace Road south of the Lied Center
An electrical vault and conduit were rebuilt. One lane in each
direction is open now, with all four lanes of traffic expected to
be opened late Friday afternoon, Aug. 23.
City of Ames road projects:
Lincoln Way along south edge of campus
A multi-month project to add a sanitary sewer line from Beach
Avenue to Hayward Avenue fell behind schedule this summer. The
city has added a second shift to get the project completed, but
work is expected to continue through November. One- to two-block
stretches of the westbound right lane of Lincoln Way will be
closed as the project moves west toward Hayward.
Hyland Avenue between Oakland Street and Ontario
Street
The storm and sanitary sewers currently are being replaced along
Hyland between Oakland Street and Ross Road. Bids were let this
week to pave Hyland between Ontario and Pammel Road after the
utility work is completed in early September. The paving work
will occur later this fall, with the road expected to be open for
a time in between. Local access will be available during the
utility work; Hyland Avenue is closed to through traffic.
Grand Avenue railroad underpass at Lincoln Way
Grand Avenue is scheduled to open Wednesday or Thursday (Aug. 21-
22), after being closed all summer.
Lincoln Way at the intersection with Clark/Walnut
avenues
The city is realigning this corner so South Walnut and Clark meet
squarely at Lincoln Way. Work began Monday, Aug. 19, with South
Walnut only closed for approximately 1/2 block. Traffic on
Lincoln Way and Clark Avenue remains open.
Travelers arriving from the south who need to get to west Ames beyond campustown may want to consider taking Mortenson Road west to either State Street or South Dakota Avenue, bypassing the Lincoln Way congestion. For those arriving from the north, stay on 13th/Ontario Street to North Dakota Avenue.
