ISU FOOD SCIENCE TEAM RECEIVES HONORABLE MENTION FOR SNACK
AMES, Iowa --The Iowa State University Food Science team received an honorable mention rating at the Institute of Food Technologists student product competition for their creation of "Skoochos," a stick-shaped chip made largely from corn flour and corn starch.
ISU team captain, Amy Mangold, said the team had been working on the development of their product since October of 1995. After consulting with faculty members and food companies, the students created Skoochos, which are accompanied by a single serving of dip.
This was the first time ISU made it into the final competition, which brought the six-member team of students to the Institute of Food Technologists annual convention in New Orleans, where judges taste-tested their innovative snack.
Along with a 20-page proposal describing the snack production process, the six teams in the final competition were judged on a slide presentation, a poster session and a sampling of the actual product.
"Through this competition, the excellence of our students will be recognized nationally and internationally," said Pam White, interim chair of the food science department.
