COURT RULES IN FAVOR OF ISU ON TENURE CASE
AMES, Iowa -- A federal jury on June 21 ruled in Iowa State University's favor on a lawsuit filed by Mark Mumford, a former faculty member of the Architecture Department in the College of Design. Mumford alleged that the university had improperly denied him tenure.
After hearing four days of testimony, the jury took less than two hours to reach the conclusion that ISU had not violated Mumford's free speech rights. Mumford had sought reinstatement to his position, $800,000 in damages and attorneys fees.
"This shows that the courts recognize tenure decisions are best left to the institutions themselves," said ISU's attorney, Iowa Assistant Attorney General CeCe Ibson.
Mumford originally made other allegations including charges that the university had violated his due process rights and did not follow its own policies. All of these other allegations were dismissed earlier by the court.
The case was heard in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa.
