ISU'S JISCHKE ON NEW KELLOGG COMMISSION
TO STUDY FUTURE OF PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES
AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University President Martin Jischke is among 23 university presidents and chancellors on a new commission created to define the direction of public universities in the future.
The Kellogg Commission on the Future of State and Land-Grant Universities met for the first time Jan. 30 in Washington, D.C. Commission members will help identify and bring attention to the kinds of changes occurring at public universities today, analyze reforms and suggest ways to accelerate the reform process.
"As the pace of change accelerates in our society, our universities must become more responsive to those changes, and they must have a vision for institutional renewal and a commitment to reform," Jischke said. "The Kellogg Commission will create a bold new plan for public universities to refocus our resources and recharge our commitment to our citizens. This is a wonderful opportunity to thoroughly examine key issues facing public universities, to preserve what is best about our institutions and change what needs to be updated."
The commission was created by the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges and funded with a $1.2 million grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
The university chief executive officers will discuss five main issues and release a set of recommendations for possible solutions. The issues are improving the student experience, studying access to public universities, defining new forms of outreach and connections to constituencies, creating a "learning society" that encourages learning throughout life, and examining the campus culture to extend to teaching and service the same rewards and status now given for outstanding research.
