SEN. KASSEBAUM TO SPEAK AT ISU'S CATT CENTER CONFERENCE

AMES, Iowa -- U.S. Sen. Nancy Landon Kassebaum will be the keynote speaker at "Campaigns, Policy and the Press," the spring conference of Iowa State University Catt Center for Women and Politics, March 1-2, at the Scheman Building.

Kassebaum, a U.S. senator since 1978, will speak at a luncheon at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday, March 2. Mary Louise Smith, first women chair of National Republican Party, will introduce Kassebaum.

Kassebaum, a Republican from Kansas, has focused much of her career on improving education and health care reform. She is chairperson of the Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee and a member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. Kassebaum recently her retirement.

Other speakers featured at the conference are Marjorie Margolies- Mezvinsky, former U.S. representative from Pennsylvania and Emmy- winning television journalist, and Anita Perez Ferguson, the first Hispanic president of the National Women's Political Caucus and U.S. House of Representatives candidate from California. The title of Margolies-Mezvinsky's talk is "Women at the Political, Legislative, and Economic Table." Perez Ferguson's talk is titled, "Women Make a Difference."

The conference also will feature several panel discussions, including one titled "Can Adversaries be Allies?" The panel, moderated by Des Moines Register political reporter David Yepsen, will include Jill June, president of Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa; Samona Joy Smit, lobbyist for Iowa Right to Life Committee; Iowa Sen. Johnnie Hammond; and Iowa Rep. Sandra Greiner.

A panel titled "Minority Involvement in the Political Process," will include LaMetta Wynn, an African American woman who is mayor of Clinton and Gentry Driver, a Native American activist.

Another panel will focus on women in school administration. It will feature Jackie Blount, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction; Barbara Licklider, assistant professor of professional studies; and Troice Fisher, director of education services at the Northern Trails Area Education Agency.

Two panels will feature political scientists doing presentations on papers written specifically for the conference.

The first scholars panel will feature: Angela High-Pippert, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, "Gender ownership of Issues in the 1992 House Campaigns"; June Sager Speakman, Roger Williams University, "Voices and Images of Female Candidates"; Kristina B. Wolff, Mankato State University, "The Representation of Women in Newspapers"; and Brian L. Werner, St. John's University, "Allocating Scarce Resources: Turning Context into Strategy"

The second scholars panel will feature: Dianne-Michele Prindeville and Teresa Braley, The University of New Mexico, "Pueblo Women: Reclaiming Their Place in Tribal Politics"; Janni Aragon, University of California, Riverside, "Revised Political Strategies: Women Candidates in 1992 as the Outsider"; and Elizabeth S. Smith, University of Minnesota, "Ordinary Individuals' Conceptualizations of Feminism."

Winners for the Carrie Chapman Catt Prize for Research on the Subject of Women and Politics will be announced at a reception at 5 p.m. on Friday, March.
