OPEN FORUM FOR EXTENSION CANDIDATE STAN JOHNSON JULY 24

AMES, Iowa -- Another finalist has been named in the search for a vice
provost for
extension at Iowa State University. Stan Johnson, director of Iowa State's
Center for
Agricultural and Rural Development, is the fifth candidate to interview for
the position.
Four other candidates were interviewed in May.
Johnson will participate in an open forum which will be held in Waterloo and
televised to
the Iowa State community via the Iowa Communications Network. The forum will
be
Wednesday, July 24, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Those in Waterloo can attend
the forum at
Hawkeye Community College. The campus community in Ames can participate in
the
forum from the Brenton Center in Curtiss Hall. Others outside Ames should
contact local
extension offices for viewing sites.
In addition to the general open forum, Johnson will discuss diversity issues
in a July 23
forum, from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m., in 210 Beardshear.
A professor of economics, Johnson has directed the Center for Agricultural
and Rural
Development since 1985. He also has served since 1984 as executive director
of the Food
and Agricultural Policy Research Institute, an ISU-University of Missouri
collaboration to
conduct research on the economic inter-relationships of the domestic and
foreign food and
agricultural industries. Since 1989, Johnson has chaired the Institute for
Policy Reform, a
policy research institute headquartered in Washington, D.C.
Johnson is an academician in the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, a
lifetime
honor that is held by only a few non-Russians.
Prior to joining Iowa State, Johnson was an economics professor at the
University of
Missouri and the University of Connecticut, Storrs. He also held visiting
appointments at
several other universities. Johnson received the B.A. from Western Illinois
University,
Macomb, in 1961, the M.S. from Texas Technological College, Lubbock, in 1962
and the
Ph.D. from Texas A&M University, College Station, in 1966. All degrees were
in
agricultural economics.
