SIGNIFICANT GIFT WILL ESTABLISH SCHOLARSHIPS,
LECTURE PROGRAM FOR ISU ENTREPRENEURSHIP CENTER
AMES, Iowa -- A scholarship program and a lecture series on entrepreneurship have been established at Iowa State University by a Wisconsin couple.
A significant gift from Roy and Bobbi Reiman, Greendale, Wis., will establish the Reiman Scholars in Entrepreneurship and the Reiman Lectures in Entrepreneurship. Both programs will be part of the university's Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship in the College of Business.
"This gift will have a major impact on Iowa State University's efforts in entrepreneurship and economic development for Iowa," said ISU President Martin Jischke. "It will greatly enhance the Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship by providing exciting opportunities for our students. At the same time, some Iowa start-up companies will benefit from ISU student-interns who will provide fresh perspectives and access to Iowa State University business resources."
The Reimans are longtime supporters of ISU. Their lead gift to ISU in 1993 launched construction of the Reiman Gardens, ISU's new horticulture gardens.
Roy Reiman, a 1957 graduate of Iowa State in agricultural journalism, is a successful Milwaukee publisher. He was named publisher of the year in 1991 by Magazine Weekly and Wisconsin's Master Entrepreneur in 1992. His Reiman Publications Ltd. specializes in publications on the home, family, food, nostalgia and a country lifestyle.
The Reiman Scholars in Entrepreneurship endowment program will provide funds for five students to work as summer interns with start-up companies. The students will have a strong interest in and commitment to entrepreneurship.
The Reiman Lectures in Entrepreneurship is another important element in establishing an outstanding entrepreneurship program at ISU, said College of Business Dean Ben Allen. The lecture series will feature leaders in business and industry who will offer students business knowledge and experience.
The Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship enables entrepreneurs to test new technologies and eventually market them commercially through the formation of new companies or the expansion of existing companies. The center was started this year with a $1 million gift from Des Moines businessman and entrepreneur John Pappajohn.
The center will focus on technologies developed by faculty and students in ISU's colleges of Engineering, Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine. It will also serve as a state-wide resource for entrepreneurs and provide educational courses, programs and outreach services to develop the entrepreneurial interests of ISU students, faculty and other Iowans.

The $1 million earmarked for the Reiman Gardens will be used for two purposes -- $500,000 for an addition and $500,000 for an endowment to provide operational funds. Plans for an addition have yet to be finalized.
The Reiman Gardens are made up of several gardens and collections, including rose, herb, fragrance, wetland, annual and campanile gardens and a dwarf conifer collection. The John P. Mahlstede Horticulture Learning Center at the gardens is a multi-purpose building for classroom and laboratory work, workshops, demonstrations, ISU events and private functions. The center also houses the extension home horticulture staff.
