ENSMINGER TO RECEIVE HONORARY DOCTORATE

AMES, Iowa -- M.E. "Gene" Ensminger, known for his work in international agricultural programs, will receive an honorary degree from Iowa State University at the spring commencement ceremony, May 11. Ensminger will receive a doctor of humane letters for his lifelong achievements in animal science, education and international agriculture.

Ensminger, of Clovis, Calif., is being recognized for his commitment to improving the status of international agriculture and people through educational programs. For more than 30 years, Ensminger has conducted international agricultural technology schools to improve livestock management practices.

In recent years, Ensminger has teamed with Iowa State officials to conduct schools and programs in Russia, the Ukraine and Cuba, said Dennis Marple, head of the ISU animal science department.

Ensminger holds bachelor of science and master of science degrees from the University of Missouri and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Minnesota. He has authored or co-authored 21 books on animal production and human nutrition. Ensminger also has published more than 500 scientific articles or bulletins.

Among Ensminger's many honors are a distinguished professorship from the Agricultural University, Havana, Cuba; an honorary doctor of laws degree from the National Agrarian University, Ukraine; and an honorary professorship of the Huazhong Agricultural College, China. He also is an honorary fellow of the American Society of Animal Science.

The honorary degree has received the approval of an ISU Faculty Senate committee and the university's administration.
