BARWIG NAMED TO IOWA ENERGY CENTER POST

AMES, Iowa -- Floyd Barwig, manager of building energy programs at Pacific Northwest Laboratory, Richland, Wash., has been named director of the Iowa Energy Center, located at Iowa State University. Barwig's appointment begins July 17.

An architect by training, Barwig coordinated programs that focused on energy use in buildings for Pacific Northwest Lab, a U.S. Department of Energy facility. He has been with the lab since 1993.

"Barwig's interest and experience in the area of building energy use is a very good fit with the Iowa Energy Center's newly developing programs at its Energy Resource Station, located on the Ankeny campus of the Des Moines Area Community College," said Patricia Swan, vice provost for research and advanced studies.

Previously, Barwig worked in the New York State Energy Office (NYSEO) for more than 12 years, serving as program manager for energy codes and appliance efficiency standards (1980 to 1984), and as director of the Technical Services Bureau (1984 to 1993), an in-house consulting team that provided architectural and engineering support to NYSEO programs.

Barwig is a registered architect in New York and also operated his own company, focusing on residential projects.

Barwig received a B.S. degree (1968) and a bachelor of architecture degree (1969) from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY; and a master of architecture (1971) from the University of California, Berkeley.

Barwig succeeds John Cummings, who retired June 30, 1995. The Iowa Energy Center was established by the Iowa Legislature as part of the 1990 Iowa Energy Efficiency Act. Its mission is to help Iowans reduce their reliance on non-renewable fuels and increase the use of renewable fuels. The center conducts and sponsors research and helps Iowans assess technology related to energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. It also supports energy education and demonstration programs throughout Iowa.

Swan has served as interim director of the center.
