ISU FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES DEAN, BEVERLY CRABTREE, TO STEP DOWN JUNE 30

AMES, Iowa -- Beverly Crabtree, dean of Iowa State University's College of Family and Consumer Sciences, has announced that she will step down as dean effective June 30, 1997. Crabtree, 59, has been dean of the college since 1987 and is ISU's senior dean. She will remain on the faculty in her position as professor of family and consumer sciences education and studies through the 1997-98 academic year.

"I felt this was an appropriate time to step down as dean and begin a new phase of my life," Crabtree said. "I'm very proud of the accomplishments of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences over the past nine -- soon to be 10 -- years. The college is very strong, in terms of the quality of the faculty, students, staff and programs, and in terms of our external support and the accomplishments of our alumni. We are also making progress in facilities. This is an opportune time for new leadership to come in."

ISU President Martin Jischke said Crabtree has provided outstanding leadership for the college. "Dr. Crabtree has led the College of Family and Consumer Sciences in a number of significant accomplishments." He cited as examples construction of the Center for Designing Foods, establishment of the Helen LeBaron Hilton Endowed Chair, a more than 10- fold increase in external funding, and securing the private funding for the new Palmer Human Development and Family Studies Building.

Crabtree said she is particularly proud of the college's success in increasing the diversity of its students. More than 7 percent are minority students, which is above the university average, and 16.5 percent are male, in what have been traditionally female-dominated curricula.

Crabtree was dean of the College of Home Economics at Oklahoma State University from 1975 to 1987, and was an administrator and faculty member at the University of Missouri, Columbia, from 1967 to 1975. She received her Ph.D. from Iowa State in 1965.

Provost John Kozak, citing Crabtree's distinguished career in family and consumer sciences education, said, "In searching for new leadership for the college, it will be a major challenge for the university to find someone with the vision and energy of Dean Crabtree."

Kozak said that a national search will be conducted to find a successor.
