ISU NAMES NEW AFFIRMATIVE ACTION OFFICER

AMES, Iowa--Deborah Love, director of equal opportunity and regulatory compliance for the University of Mississippi, has been named Iowa State University's assistant to the president and affirmative action officer.

"We are delighted to have someone of Deborah's experience and qualifications as our new affirmative action officer," said ISU President Martin Jischke. "Affirmative action is an important tool in helping increase the diversity of Iowa State University, and the appointment of Deborah reaffirms our commitment to this effort."

Love has been at the University of Mississippi for nearly two years. She also served as assistant to the dean at Mississippi from 1992 to 1994. Before that, she was a reference and research librarian at the Mississippi College School of Law, Jackson; and a law clerk with Ellen Bonner, P.A., and the Public Service Intern Program, both in Gulfport, Miss. She also served in the U.S. Army.

Love received a B.S. in criminal justice in 1981 from Jackson State University, Jackson, Miss.; and a J.D. in 1991 from the University of Mississippi School of Law.

As assistant to the president and affirmative action officer at Iowa State, Love will develop and monitor equal employment opportunity and affirmative action policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state and Board of Regents' mandates; advise the administration, faculty and staff; participate in training programs; investigate complaints of discrimination; and act as liaison with federal and state enforcement agencies on compliance reviews.

Love will assume her new duties on Aug. 15, 1996.

Jeanne Johnson has served as interim director of the Affirmative Action Office since David Torres resigned last August.
