INSTITUTE LOOKS AT WORLD POPULATION GROWTH, HUMAN RIGHTS

AMES, Iowa --The 1996 Institute on World Affairs at Iowa State University will address cultural and ethical issues related to population, development and human rights. The institute opens Sunday, Nov. 3, and concludes Thursday, Nov. 7. All sessions are in the Memorial Union.

Carl Djerassi, professor of chemistry at Stanford University and so-called "father of the birth control pill," will give the keynote address at 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, in the Sun Room. His address is titled "Where's the Pill for Men and Other Complaints."

In addition to developing the first steroid used effectively for birth control, Djerassi developed antihistamines, synthesized cortisone and founded one of the first environmentally aware pesticide companies. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Ames native Holly Burkhalter will speak on "Economic Rights and the Future of International Human Rights" at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in the South Ballroom. Burkhalter is the director of advocacy for Human Rights Watch, a private human rights research and monitoring organization, and runs the group's Washington, D.C., office. Previously, she staffed the U.S. House Foreign Affairs subcommittee on Human Rights and International Organizations. Her articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor and Legal Times.

Julian Simon, a faculty member at the University of Maryland, will give a talk titled "More People, Greater Wealth, More Resources, Healthier Environment" at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, in the Pioneer Room. Simon has studied population and immigration economics for more than 25 years. His books include Population Matters, The Economics of Population Growth, Population and Development in Poor Countries and The State of Humanity.
