AMES, Iowa -- Public service announcement videos created by a group of Iowa State University journalism and mass communication students have received awards from the Iowa State Patrol.
The students were recognized for their work at a ceremony Friday, Oct. 4, at the Wallace Building in Des Moines.
The students volunteered to create public service announcements, which were requested by the ISP. The students formed two groups, each one focusing on one video. One group produced a spot to discourage drunk driving and the other produced a public service announcement encouraging seat belt use. The ISP sent the video on drunk driving to the Uniform Safety Education Officer's Workshop national conference in Minnesota, where it won first prize in a competition. The video featured a young girl visiting the mother's gravesite with her father. The mother had been killed by a drunk driver.
The public service announcements will be used statewide by the ISP.
The students involved were Marcus Bliss, Bettendorf; Stacey Baier, Cedar Rapids; Jason Bertsch, Polk City; Shannon Booth, Marcus; Kyle Longnecker, Brooklyn Park, Minn., and Stephanie Larsen, Lakeville, Minn. The students are in a class taught by Dom Caristi, assistant professor of journalism and mass communication.
