ISU ESTABLISHES STANLEY CHAIR IN INTERDISCIPLINARY ENGINEERING

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's College of Engineering has established the Stanley Chair in Interdisciplinary Engineering, endowed by a gift in excess of $1 million from Richard H. and Mary Jo Stanley, Muscatine.

Richard Stanley is chairman of Stanley Consultants, Inc., Muscatine, international consultants in engineering, architecture, planning and management. He also is vice chairman of the board of HON Industries, Inc., Muscatine, a manufacturer of office furniture and home building products; and chair and president of the Stanley Foundation, a private organization that encourages study, research and discussion of international issues as a way to achieve peace.

"We are very excited about the opportunity this new chair provides us," said James Melsa, dean of ISU's College of Engineering. "It provides significant momentum toward our goal of providing a learning-based, practice-oriented educational experience for our students."

G. David Bergland, ISU professor of electrical and computer engineering, will be the first Stanley Chair.

Stanley is past chairman of the Committee on Federal Procurement of Architectural and Engineering Services and the National Construction Industry Council, and past president of the American Consulting Engineers Council and the Iowa Engineering Society. He has received a number of awards, including the Marston Medal and a Professional Achievement Citation in Engineering from ISU; a Diamond Jubilee Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers; and the Herbert Hoover Centennial Award from the Iowa Engineering Society.

Stanley graduated from ISU in 1955 with bachelor's degrees in mechanical and electrical engineering, and received a master's degree in sanitary engineering from the University of Iowa in 1963.

Mary Jo Stanley graduated from Iowa State in 1955 with a bachelor's degree in home economics. She is vice chair and director of the Stanley Foundation and chair of the Muscatine Art Center Support Foundation. She also is active in other community organizations, including the First Presbyterian Church, the Muscatine Center for Strategic Action and the Muscatine Area AIDS Coalition, which she helped establish. The Stanleys have three children and five grandchildren.

Prior to coming to ISU, Bergland was head of the executive consulting department at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Holmdel, N.J. As the Stanley Chair, Bergland will promote leadership skills, develop courses and curricula within the College of Engineering, and maintain communication among engineering and non-engineering professionals in academia and industry. He received bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees in electrical engineering from Iowa State in 1962, 1964 and 1966, respectively.
