ISU SEEKS APPROVAL OF PERFORMING ARTS MAJOR

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University is seeking approval for a new undergraduate major and minor in the performing arts.

University officials submitted a request for the new degree program to the Iowa State Board of Regents at a meeting today (June 19) in Cedar Falls.

The degree program would be within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and based on coursework offered by ISU's music, theater and dance programs, as well as general education requirements of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

The new degree program will address a need students in the performing arts have for a major listed on their diploma that reflects specific skills, training and employment goals. Students who earn a performing arts degree could pursue a variety of career options in film, theater and music. The proposed minor in performing arts will provide a secondary undergraduate field of study for students interested in using the performing arts to supplement their primary interests. For example, business students can use the minor to lay groundwork for careers in arts administration.

The new degree program will become available to students pending approval by the Board of Regents.
