FACT SHEET: ISU'S INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTS

International Agreements
Iowa State University had 113 international agreements with institutions in 46 nations during fiscal year 1995. Of those agreements, 56 were active, 51 were inactive, and six were proposed. International agreements provide opportunities for student and faculty exchanges, research collaboration, joint publication of academic articles and general exchange of information.

In fiscal year 1993, ISU had 78 international agreements with institutions in 37 countries. In fiscal year 1994, the university had 105 agreements with 44 nations.

An "active agreement" is one under which faculty, staff or students traveled abroad during fiscal year 1995. An "inactive agreement" signifies participants did not travel abroad; however, research and other scholarly activities may have taken place.

Agreements with Russia
ISU had the most agreements with Russian institutions, with 18 (six active, 11 inactive and one proposed). Following Russia was Australia with seven ISU agreements and Ukraine and Taiwan with six each.

New agreements
In fiscal year 1995, Iowa State signed new agreements with several institutions in other nations, including the University of Queensland, Australia; University of West Bohemia, Czech Republic; Armenian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Armenia; Agricultural Research Institute of Moldova, Moldova; and Federal Department of Bankruptcy, Russia.

ISU students abroad
In fiscal year 1995, 281 ISU students studied abroad, including 53 in Britain, 42 in Australia, 33 in Italy, 29 in Russia and 27 in Mexico. Another 44 ISU students gained international experience by working abroad, according to the Office of International Students and Scholars.
