AMES, Iowa -- The ISU Library Friends, in cooperation with the Ames Public Library Friends, will get a jump on Halloween with a public reading Sunday afternoon, Oct. 20. From 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., authors Ruth Hein and Vicky Hinsenbrock will read from their book, Ghostly Tales of Iowa, in the second floor community room of the Ames Public Library, 515 Douglas Ave. At the same time Beth Horner, a storyteller from the Chicago area, will keep children entertained with "stories to chill your spine and tickle your funnybone." Horner will tell her tales in the library's auditorium, first floor. Both activities are free and open to the public.
Hinsenbrock works as a credit manager for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Decorah. Hein is a retired creative writing teacher, formerly of Decorah and now living in Worthington, Minn. Their book, published by the ISU Press, retells 50 stories gathered by the two from all over the state.
Missouri native Horner, a former librarian and drama instructor, has been a touring storyteller for about 15 years. She draws from a variety of folk and literary traditions in creating her performances, which also incorporate music and listener participation.
ISU Library Friends was founded in 1992 to promote the Iowa State University library, attract financial support and sponsor activities that showcase library resources. Ames Public Library Friends promotes the quality and growth of the city's library resources and services.
