ISU VETERINARY MEDICINE PROFESSOR HONORED FOR BOVINE RESEARCH
AMES, Iowa -- Dr. Mark Ackermann, professor of veterinary pathology at Iowa State University, received the 2002 Pfizer Excellence in Bovine Research Award during the national assembly of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners on Sept. 26.
Ackermann researches bovine respiratory disease. His research on antimicrobial peptide production has advanced understanding of potential factors to reduce respiratory tract infection in cattle. Bovine respiratory disease costs cattle producers millions of dollars each year.
Ackermann earned his D.V.M. and Ph.D. from Iowa State. Prior to joining the Iowa State faculty in 1996, he was a veterinary medical officer and lead scientist for 10 years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Animal Disease Center, Ames. Ackermann is a board-certified veterinary pathologist.
Ackermann was named the John G. Salsbury Chair in Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State in 2001. He is continuing his research on bovine respiratory syncytial virus and parainfluenza virus, common causes of pneumonia in cattle and sheep.
The Excellence in Bovine Research Award is sponsored by Pfizer Animal Health.
