NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR ISU STUDENT

AMES, Iowa -- Sarah Bauer, a senior at Iowa State University with dual majors in chemical engineering and music, has been named a Tau Beta Pi Laureate for 2002.

Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society, bestows this recognition annually on only three students nationwide who have excelled in areas beyond their technical majors. Bauer and the two other Laureates will receive $2,500 cash awards and commemorative plaques at Tau Beta Pi's 97th annual convention, Oct. 5, in Detroit.

Bauer, from St. Charles, Ill., is an honors student in the colleges of engineering and liberal arts and sciences. She is a top performer for both the ISU Orchestra and the Wind Ensemble, where she is principal flutist and plays the piccolo. Bauer's commitment extends beyond campus. She maintains a web site that is a comprehensive guide on how to select and purchase a flute.

In engineering, Bauer served on Iowa State's chemical engineering department curriculum committee and has been active in a project to design and implement an electronic course evaluation system. In addition, as an officer in the Iowa Alpha chapter of Tau Beta Pi, she has been instrumental in developing electronic files so information can be easily transferred to new officers. Bauer also is a member of the ISU Student Chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and Omega Chi Epsilon Honor Society.

Since her arrival on campus as a National Merit Scholar in 1998, Bauer has taken advantage of several opportunities to gain hands-on experiences. She participated in the Honors Mentor Program working in a lab where her job was to make sulfoxide compounds in order to investigate their photochemical properties. This fall, she is working on an undergraduate research project focusing on biorenewable resources.

Bauer has had three summer internships, gaining a variety of industry experiences. Two of the internships were with Procter and Gamble -- investigating new ways of refining vegetable oils to retain micronutrients and working on the processing of Pringle's potato chips. This past summer, Bauer worked at CIMA Lab Inc., Eden Prairie, Minn., a pharmaceutical company, where she worked on packaging processes.
