EDUCATIONAL TALENT SEARCH RECEIVES $1.3 MILLION TRIO GRANT

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's Educational Talent Search (ETS) program has received a $1.3 million discretionary TRIO grant from the U. S. Department of Education. The four-year grant, which began on Sept. 1, 2002, was awarded in a competitive process.

Educational Talent Search (ETS) is one of several TRIO programs funded by the federal government at Iowa State University. The others are Upward Bound, Student Support Services and Ronald E. McNair programs.

The objective of the ETS program is to identify and assist individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The program provides academic, career, and financial counseling to its participants and encourages them to graduate from high school and continue to the postsecondary school of their choice.

Educational Talent Search also serves high school dropouts by encouraging them to reenter the educational system and complete their education. The goal of Educational Talent Search is to increase the number of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school and enroll in a postsecondary education institution of their choice.

The Iowa State University ETS program serves 12 high schools and six middle schools in Central Iowa and Dubuque. Participants are selected from these 18 target schools or must reside within the counties in which the schools are located. Participants are identified as early as the 6th grade and can be as old as 27.

"TRIO" arose from the three original programs (Upward Bound, Talent Search and Student Support Services) created under the Higher Education Act of 1965. There currently are five TRIO programs authorized under the Higher Education Act.
