IOWA STATE CAMPUS EVENTS WILL COMMEMORATE SEPT. 11

AMES, Iowa -- Several Iowa State University events are planned on Sept. 11 to commemorate the one-year anniversary of terrorist plane hijackings that killed thousands of Americans in New York City, Washington, D.C., and eastern Pennsylvania.

Spirit week promotes volunteerism
"Celebrating the Human Spirit" Day, on Wednesday, Sept. 11, actually is part of a six-day "Cyclone Spirit Week" coordinated by the division of student affairs to promote themes of volunteerism and community on the ISU campus.

More information about Cyclone Spirit Week, including a community service drive, fund-raising competition with the University of Iowa to benefit the Children's Miracle Network and a dance party, is online at http://www.sac.iastate.edu/SpiritWeek/spiritweek.htm.

Memory wall at Union
From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sept. 11, people are invited to stop by the main floor of the Memorial Union. A memory wall of large sheets of paper in the South Ballroom will give visitors a chance to record their reflections and thoughts; network broadcasts focusing on the anniversary will be shown all day on large screen television in the Great Hall; and artwork reflecting on Sept. 11, 2001, and live performances that interpret and celebrate the "human spirit" will be ongoing in the Sun Room.

Noon ceremony
The campus community will observe 10 minutes of silence at noon. This will be followed by a 12:10 p.m. carillon concert by ISU carillonneur Tin-shi Tam and a program from the front steps of Curtiss Hall. President Gregory Geoffroy, Ames mayor Ted Tedesco, vice president for student affairs Tom Hill, and Government of the Student Body president T.J. Schneider are among the scheduled speakers. In case of rain, the program will be held in the Memorial Union Great Hall.

Soundscape based on recollections
Also at noon, ISU assistant professor of music Anne Deane will present her "Ashes to Ashes/Dance Driving," a soundscape based on recollections of survivors and witnesses of the World Trade Center attacks. The free performance is in the Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall, Music Building. Deane's work will become part of a larger memorial collaboration that involves dance and computer animation.

Color guard at the central flagpole
Iowa State ROTC students, representing the various branches of the armed services, will hold a 15-minute ceremony at the main flagpole on central campus at 5 p.m. Wednesday, when the state and national flags are retrieved for the day.

Candlelight vigil
A candlelight vigil at Lake LaVerne will begin at 8 p.m. Participants are asked to pick up candles from tables on the west side of the Memorial Union and move to a spot around the lake. Mike Golemo, assistant professor of music (tenor saxophone) and director of bands, will play from the west terrace of the Memorial Union. Pre-recorded music also will be used. In case of rain, a short program will be held in the Memorial Union Great Hall.

Following the vigil, the Sun Room, Great Hall and South Ballroom will be an informal place for small groups to gather, pray and discuss.

BBC broadcasts "town meeting"
WOI-AM Radio will host one of three American segments of a BBC around-the-world, 24-hour special, "Sept. 11: The Day That Changed the World." A town meeting from studio A in the Communications Building on campus will be broadcast live from 8 to 10 p.m. Selected panelists for the program include ISU professor of political science Steffen Schmidt, ISU student Leia Guccione, former Iowa governor Robert Ray and Cedar Rapids Muslim Joe Aossey. One of the questions they'll address is whether the world's greatest superpower still lives in fear, one year later. All studio seats are spoken for. Other presentations in the program will come from New York City, Washington, D.C., London, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Middle East.

Reiman visitors to donate canned goods
Visitors to ISU's Reiman Gardens on Sept. 11 will have the option of paying the admittance fee or donating one canned good for admission. Admission fees collected on Sept. 11 will be donated to the Ames Fire Department. Canned goods collected will be brought to Mid-Iowa Community Action's food shelf, Ames.

Ames memorial at Bandshell Park
The city of Ames also is planning a memorial event, to which the ISU community is invited. It will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Bandshell Park, located at Duff Avenue and Sixth Street, east of downtown. The event is expected to last about an hour.
