IOWA STATE ENGLISH PROFESSOR AWARDED FELLOWSHIP BY VIRGINIA CENTER FOR THE CREATIVE ARTS
AMES, Iowa -- Sheryl St. Germain, associate professor of English at Iowa State University, has been awarded a fellowship by the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA). St. Germain will be one of about 20 visual artists, writers and composers focusing on their own creative projects at this working retreat.
St. Germain is the author of several non-fiction and poetry books, including "Swamp Songs: The Making of an Unruly Woman," a memoir of growing up in New Orleans, set to publish in January.
She is currently working on another non-fiction book, "The Dark Behind Us." The book is a personal and cultural memoir that investigates the issues facing a single mother raising a defiant, intelligent son diagnosed with attention deficit disorder.
Prior to her fellowship from the VCCA, St. Germain received a residency at the Vermont Studies Center for the same project. One of the nation's largest year-round artists' communities, a typical residency at VCCA ranges from two weeks to two months.
