EARLY EDUCATION EXPERT IS HANSEN EARLY CHILDHOOD LECTURER

AMES, Iowa -- A nationally recognized expert on early childhood education and curriculum development has been named the Barbara E. (Mound) Hansen Early Childhood Lecture Series speaker for 2002-2003 in Iowa State University's College of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Diane Trister Dodge, the Hansen Lecturer, is the founder of Teaching Strategies Inc., a Washington, D.C.-based publishing and training company specializing in curriculum materials for children from birth to eighth-grade. She will be at Iowa State Oct. 28 - 30.

Dodge has been a coordinator of the Head Start program in Mississippi and has worked at the National Child Day Care Association, Washington, D.C. She authored "The Creative Curriculum," about early-childhood education, and has written or co-written more than 20 additional books on the subject.

"Diane Trister Dodge exemplifies the integrative and holistic focus of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences to advance the well being of children, families, and consumers," said Carla Peterson, associate professor of human development and family studies. "Dodge has numerous experiences working across academic, business, government, and social service agencies. Her visit will enhance the experiences of students, faculty members, and early childhood educators and family members."

Dodge will present a public lecture, "What Works, What Counts: Using Brain Research to Inform Us About Developmentally Appropriate Practices," targeted at early education educators, at Meeker Elementary School, 300 20th St., Ames, at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 28. The lecture is free and open to the public.

On Oct. 29, Dodge will tour the ISU Child Development Laboratory School; meet with students both in the classroom and informally; and interact with lab school faculty and staff.

Established last year, the Hansen Early Childhood Education Series Endowment is made possible by a gift from Richard and Barbara (Mound) Hansen. The Hansens created the series to bring contemporary, issue-oriented topics on early childhood education to the College of Family and Consumer Sciences.
