VETERINARY MEDICINE'S APLEY NAMED LLOYD ENDOWED PROFESSOR AT ISU
AMES, Iowa -- Dr. Michael Apley, associate professor of veterinary diagnostics and production animal medicine, has been named the W. Eugene and Linda Lloyd Endowed Professor in the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
"We're pleased to recognize Dr. Apley's accomplishments in beef production medicine and research in food animal clinical pharmacology. The support linked to the Lloyd professorship will enable him to advance our understanding of how antibiotics can be used for food animals while protecting public health against antibiotic resistance," said Dr. Norman Cheville, dean of veterinary medicine and Clarence Hartley Covault Distinguished Professor in Veterinary Medicine.
The three-year appointment includes additional resources for research, making it possible for Apley to expand studies in food animal antibiotic (antimicrobial) use. His research findings will help define the effect of food animal antibiotic use on humans and help establish testing criteria for therapy of enteric disease in food animals.
Apley has served on international and national panels related to veterinary drug issues and antimicrobial resistance. He is vice chairman of the American Veterinary Medical Association's Judicious Antimicrobial Use Steering Committee.
Apley joined the Iowa State faculty in 1996. He earned his D.V.M. (1987) and Ph.D. (1992) at Kansas State University. He is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology.
Dr. W. Eugene Lloyd is a 1949 graduate of Iowa State's College of Veterinary Medicine. He and Linda R. Lloyd established the professorship to support special projects in toxicology, especially in the areas of food safety and risk assessment of pesticides.
