IOWA STATE PROFESSOR ELECTED AAAS FELLOW
AMES, Iowa -- Costas Soukoulis, professor of physics and astronomy at Iowa State University and senior physicist with the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Ames Laboratory, has been elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The AAAS is the world's largest federation of scientists.
A faculty member since 1984, Soukoulis was honored for notable pioneering contributions to the understanding of the localization of light, random lasers and photonic crystals.
Soukoulis also is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (1991) and held an Alexander Von Humboldt Fellowship (1991). He received an Energy 100 Award and Science 100 Award from the DOE, and in 1992 was recognized by the DOE's materials sciences division for "outstanding scientific accomplishment in solid state physics."
Soukoulis received Iowa State's Outstanding Achievement in Research Award in 2001 and an equivalent honor from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 2000.
