HISTORIC ISU FIGURE AND HISTORIC AMES HOUSE SUBJECT OF HORTICULTURE TALK AT ISU ON NOV. 21
AMES, Iowa -- The name J.L. Budd weaves through the early history of Iowa State University and Ames, leading to one of the university's most notable graduates, George Washington Carver.
While a student at Iowa State, Carver is believed to have lived in the home of Budd, who was professor and chair of horticulture from 1877 to 1899.
The J.L. Budd home at 804 Kellogg, which is now a Youth and Shelter Services (YSS) facility, has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
A talk that touches on historic buildings, Budd's work as an early Iowa horticulturist and the relationship between Carver and Budd, will be presented at 4:10 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 21, in 118 Horticulture Hall. The talk, "J.L. Budd: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow," will be presented by public historian William Page, Des Moines, and YSS CEO George Belitsos, Ames.
The event, which is presented by the horticulture department and YSS, is free and open to the public. A reception with refreshments will follow at 5 p.m.
