IOWA STATE'S DIRECTOR OF AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES HONORED AS CASE PROFESSOR OF THE YEAR FOR IOWA

AMES, Iowa -- J. Herman Blake, director of African American Studies at Iowa State University, has been named the 2002 U.S. Professor of the Year for the state of Iowa by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

Blake, who has been at Iowa State since1998, is a professor of sociology and educational leadership and policy studies. He is responsible for the development and curriculum of the African American Studies program and also teaches for the department of sociology and the College of Education.

Blake was honored Nov. 21 at events at the National Press Club and on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes outstanding undergraduate instructors and is based on recommendations made by peers, colleagues, and current and former students. In Iowa, 11 professors from five universities or colleges were nominated. Nationally, 422 professors from 308 institutions were nominated.

Prior to coming to Iowa State, Blake was vice chancellor for undergraduate education at Indiana University/Purdue University, Indianapolis, Ind. He also has served as the president of Tougaloo College, Mississippi, and was the Eugene M. Lang Visiting Professor of Social Change at Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, Pennsylvania.
