ISU DESIGN ASSOCIATE DEAN ELECTED AIA VICE PRESIDENT

AMES, Iowa -- Kate Schwennsen, associate dean of Iowa State University's College of Design, has been elected national vice president of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

She was elected to the leadership position on May 10, after being named to the AIA College of Fellows. As vice president, Schwennsen will work to increase collaboration among AIA groups.

Schwennsen is the first woman in Iowa to be named to the prestigious AIA College of Fellows. She was selected for her efforts to integrate architectural education and practice.

Fellowship in the AIA is an honor awarded to members who have made contributions of national significance to the architectural profession. There are more than 71,000 AIA members, but fewer than 2,400 are AIA Fellows. To be considered for Fellowship, architects must have at least 10 years of membership in the AIA, and members must meet certain standards.

Schwennsen has served in a variety of position with the AIA, including president of the Iowa chapter. She practiced full time for 10 years, first with Engelbrecht and Griffin Architects, PC, and later with Bloodgood Architects and Planners, both in Des Moines. She joined the Iowa State architecture faculty in August 1990.

Schwennsen has been a member of the AIA Iowa Chapter since 1988.
