FIRST ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL COLOUR CONGRESS TO BE AT IOWA STATE MAY 19-21

AMES, Iowa -- Artists and academics interested in natural dyes will gather at Iowa State University May 19-21.

Seven international, national and regional experts and Iowa State textiles and clothing professors who work with natural dyes will offer workshops ranging from screen-printing to fiber art during the event. Workshops range from "bogolan fini" (mud cloth) to types of red dye from the cochineal insect.

"This will be an example of the Third World -- experts from India, Bangladesh, Mexico and Korea -- teaching the First World how to use indigenous plants (indigo, madder, cutch and ragweed) and insects (cochineal beetles and aphids) to make commercial dyes," said Sara Kadolph, associate professor of textiles and clothing in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences.

The keynote speaker is Rita Adrosko, curator emerita, Textiles Collection, National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. She will speak on the "Birth of a Dyebook" at 9 am. Sunday, May 19, in Thomas H. Benton Auditorium.
