QUICK LINKS Today's News News releases ISU homepage NEWS RELEASE 06-07-02 Contacts: Dan Armstrong, Chemistry, (515) 294-1392 Bridget Bailey, News Service, (515) 294-6881 IOWA STATE PROFESSOR IS ONE OF MOST CITED CHEMISTRY RESEARCHERS AMES, Iowa -- Dan Armstrong, an Iowa State University professor of chemistry, has been named to the Institute for Scientific Information's 100 most highly cited researchers in chemistry during the past 20 years. Armstrong's main research focuses on complex antibiotics. His work has led to a chromatography technique widely used in the pharmaceutical industry to eliminate side effects from drugs. Chromatography is a means of discovering the parts in a mixture by passing it through a column that absorbs each component of the mixture differently. Recently, Armstrong developed a separation-based method to rapidly identify bacteria and viruses. He said it is a promising approach for diagnosing certain diseases and for rapidly identifying potentially harmful microbes in the environment.
