ISU VET MED DEAN RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD FOR RESEARCH

AMES, Iowa -- Norman Cheville, dean of Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, has received the 2002 American Feed Industry Association Research Award. The award was presented July 13 at the American Veterinary Medical Association annual convention.

The award recognizes outstanding research by a veterinarian on nutrition or disease affecting livestock or poultry production.

Cheville is a leading researcher on bovine brucellosis. He was part of a team that developed a vaccine important in eradicating this highly infectious disease. He was one of two researchers selected by the National Academy of Sciences in 1997 to investigate brucellosis transmission in bison and elk in the Yellowstone National Park area.

Cheville's research, published in more than 200 scientific papers, has helped advance understanding of the origin and development of several viral disease agents, including papilloma virus and pox virus. He also made fundamental contributions to understanding avian encephalomyelitis, hog cholera and Newcastle disease. He is the author of seven books on veterinary pathology.

Cheville was named Iowa State's dean of veterinary medicine in 2001. He previously served as research leader and chief of pathology at the National Animal Disease Center for 25 years. He was chair of Iowa State's veterinary pathology department for five years.

Cheville earned his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin (1964) and his doctor of veterinary medicine from Iowa State (1959). He received an honorary degree from the University of Liege, Belgium, in 1986.
